Frequently Asked Questions

● When did ElevationSF get started? - June of 2005

● Who founded ElevationSF? - ElevationSF was founded by Rico Trias, a San Francisco native
who has a passion for bringing people together! :p

● How did the club get named?
One of the first things that came to mind when it came to hiking, were Mountains. So, the
word elevation was thought of. In addition, we like to think of the club as being a bit
different than other clubs that are out there. Whereas, we're not just an ordinary hiking club,
but a social & activity group for fun peeps to meet. The SF part, represents the San
Francisco Bay Area region.
● What is the average age of the members? - mid-20's to mid-30's.

● What is the normal attendance?
Between 16-25 people attends our hikes on average. We like to keep it manageable, under
35 people. On some occasions, there can be up to 40 people. We're organizing more hikes
each year, in comparison to previous years. The group just keeps on growing! In the future,
there is definite plans for more moderators & organizers. If you are a member who
appreciates & are supportive of ElevationSF, and would like to become a valuable asset and
lead future hikes, please stay tuned. :-)

● What is the ratio of active members to newbies? - Overall it's 50/50.
Sometimes there can be outings where one can outweigh the other. However, keep-in-mind,
active members only attends 1-3 times a month, while other attend once every 2-4 months.
There are always a handful of people that are new to the group, or new to each other. :-)

● What is the ratio of male to female on each hike? - Overall it's 50/50

● Are members allowed to invite Guest? - Yes.. of course!

● How often can I attend?
You can attend as often as you like. However, if you're a newbie, the best way to get to
know how the group operates and to find out what we're all about, is to join us on one of our
hikes. You'll never know, until you give us a try! ;-)

● Will anything happen to my membership if I RSVP and miss the hike? - No.
We understand everyone have active lives, and on the day of the hike outing there can be
times when some members are unable to make it for whatever reason, even if it's sleeping
in.

We have faith in our regular members, and there are many members who previously
attended our hikes, that really would like to join us. Basically, we want members who feel
good about joining us on our hikes, not to feel obligated or bitter, because they have to.
After all, this is a recreational outdoor activity group, and it should be fun for all! Just be
aware of any inconveniences it may have on others, especially if you have arranged
carpooling with someone. Including taking up spots, whereas permits are required.

● Can I attend if I don't RSVP? - Yes
However, please try your best to not make it a normal routine. A handful of park systems
(especially in the Peninsula area) require group permits, and a hefty $fine can be issued if
we're over the group limit.

In addition, keep in mind that if there are any changes/updates, only the people who RSVP
will be sent a notification. RSVP'ing also encourages other people to join. ;-)
There are many people who live in SF, in the East Bay and South Bay/Penninsula Regions. -
We're still trying to work with those people living in the North Bay. ;-)

● Why is the SF Meeting Spot in the Inner Sunset District?
This location was chosen as the primary location for San Francisco residents for the following
reasons:
- it's a central location in the city.
- there are a handful of public transportation lines (muni) stopping within a block or 2.
- all-day parking can be found in Golden Gate Park on weekends.
- it has easy access to head North, South or East Bound.
- there are a handful of places for people to grab a cup of coffee, or get a bite to eat before
the meeting time.

● Do I have to meet at the SF Meeting Spot? - No.
The SF Meeting Spot is planned as an initial meeting place for SF residents, and a place
people can make final carpooling arrangements.

For people living in downtown San Francisco or neighboring districts, and other parts of the
Bar Area. There is a good chance of finding others to carpool with, just so as long as you
RSVP and insert your location in your comment.
● Are there any membership fees? - Currently, the answer is no.
There have been no fees since the group started in 2005. In the future and with careful
consideration, a decision will be made whether there will be a low annual membership fee, or
if this will become a donation run group. Please keep in mind, websites and bandwidth cost
$$ to run. Not to mention the time & effort it takes to run a club.

● What about advertisements?
This group has a no solicitation and no spamming policy. Advertisements is another form of
solicitation. Although it is not "set it stone", having minimal advertising in combination with
a low membership fee, may be an option later.

● Is there anything I can do to contribute now?
If you appreciate the hiking group and would like to contribute, there are a variety of simple
ways you can do so now.
- update your profile & upload a avatar, to make our community more member friendly
- bring a friend with you on a hike
- later, be a part of the ElevationSF Team (more on this later)
